In 1964, the KAC opened its doors with a mission to empower individuals with disabilities and provide them with opportunities for growth and independence. As we celebrate our 60th anniversary, we reflect on the remarkable journey that has led us to where we are today, particularly highlighting the strides made through our Community Employment Program.
The inception of our Community Employment Program in 1974 marked a pivotal moment in our history. It arose from a pressing question: what lay ahead for individuals with disabilities after completing special education programs? At KAC, we envisioned a future where individuals with disabilities could thrive as contributing members of society, fulfilling roles as tax-paying citizens and active participants in their communities.
The late 1960s saw a significant shift in legislation, opening doors to the establishment of sheltered workshops. With the support of a federal Hill-Burton grant, alongside local contributions and prudent financial management, KAC seized the opportunity for growth. We expanded our facilities and services to accommodate the evolving needs of our community, laying the groundwork for the emergence of our Community Employment Program.
At its core, our Community Employment Program embodies KAC’s unwavering commitment to fostering independence and self-sufficiency among individuals with disabilities.
